Surf or Snow? Get Both in One Trip

Southern California vacation destinations offer the ideal solution for a family trip because of the diverse activities available for all age groups. Visitors to the region will find abundant outdoor recreation that includes water sports, hiking, bicycling and skiing, available during the winter months. Whether the decision involves a home base in Los Angeles, Orange County or San Diego, the beach, mountains and entertainment centers are nearby.

Los Angeles as a Home Base

Although the weather in the Los Angeles Basin tends to be mild year-round, the elevation at the regional ski resorts is conducive to receiving, and often generating, snow. The local ski areas are active during mid-winter months and may be open into April. During the summer, ski trails become favorite hiking or mountain biking paths meandering through alpine forests and offering views of secluded streams and lakes.

A morning spent skiing in the mountains and an afternoon relaxing at the beach is not an unfeasible goal in southern California. The wide sandy beaches found in Santa Monica are ideal for enjoying a dip in the Pacific, relaxing on the beach or cycling on the boardwalk after lunch. Each family member may choose their own activity during the day and reunite in the evening at one of the casual restaurants by the beach.

Staying in Orange County to Ski and Surf

Using Orange County, California as a home base offers versatility and plenty of action. Located between Los Angeles and San Diego, the area is known for pristine beaches and exciting sports and recreation. The snow-capped San Bernardino Mountains are often seen from Orange County vacation rentals and can be reached within an hour. First-class skiing with challenging slopes can occupy one day and the next be filled by a jet-ski excursion at Dana Point or Newport Beach. One of the top surf spots in California resides in San Clemente and rental equipment including surfboards, wetsuits and beach chairs are widely available from local vendors.

A Family Vacation in San Diego

A mild year-round climate attracts international visitors to the San Diego area where outdoor recreation fits the daily lifestyle. Vacation destinations in this southern tip of California appeal to families because of the many attractions that are within an easy reach. Sea World and the San Diego Zoo keep kids entertained for hours. Swimming, surfing and body boarding are favorite local pastimes at Pacific Beach or La Jolla, and visitors may enjoy renting a sailboat in Mission Bay or taking a whale watching excursion from the harbor.

Several active ski resorts can be reached in less than two hours from San Diego. Snowboarding, ice skating and family fun centers in the mountains add to the appeal, and families may enjoy taking ski lessons from experienced trainers.

Many families have different interests and would like to enjoy their own sport during a vacation. By booking a place in LA, Orange County or San Diego, each parent can find their favorite activity and still be together for quality family time.
